Archontophoenix purpurea

palm DATA

Habitat: Mount Lewis in Northeast Queensland, Australia. Up to 1200m elevation.

Notes: The same genus as the common King palm, however this species has a beautiful purple crownshaft and much larger seeds.

Cold Hardiness: Its relatively higher elevation in the tropics gives it a chance in cooler climates. Perhaps the most frost-resistant member of its genus.

Conservation

This palm has a limited range on the slopes of Mt. Lewis. It is beginning to be widely cultivated, but more information is needed to determine its status in situ.
