Basselinia eriostachys
(Drip Tip)

palm DATA

Habitat: New Caledonia

Notes:  Formerly known as Basselinia gracilis (which is now a separate palm), this palm has a red to purple crownshaft and various leaf forms.

Cold Hardiness: Can handle a protected spot in a Mediterranean climate.

Conservation

Very limited range, and many of the areas that this palm exists are being used as mahogany plantations – when these trees are harvested, little thought will be given to preserving the palms that have grown under their shade. This is not a very fast palm and does not recover well from disturbance.
